How to Ask AI What to Play: Mood Prompts That Get Better Game Picks
An AI game recommendation is only as good as what you tell it. The same account can get a forgettable pick or an almost eerily right one, depending on one text box: the mood. This guide shows what the AI already knows about you, what it doesn't, and how to write the sentence that makes the difference. (For the basics of how the feature works, start with AI game recommendations.)
What the AI already knows
You don't need to repeat any of this in your prompt. When you ask for a pick, NXTO gives the AI:
- Your completed and rated games, with their genres and tags, highest rated first.
- What you're currently playing.
- Your recently dropped games, so it can avoid repeating a pattern that didn't work for you.
- Your whole library (up to your 300 most recent games), so it never suggests something you already own.
It does not know your mood tonight, how much time you have, who you're playing with, or what you're sick of. That is exactly what the text box is for.
The four things worth putting in a prompt
1. Length
“Under 10 hours”, “something I can finish in a weekend”, “a long game for the winter”. Length is the single most useful constraint, because it's invisible in your history.
2. Mood or energy
“Cozy and low stakes”, “I want to feel clever”, “brain-off after work”, “tense and atmospheric”.
3. Context
“Co-op with my partner”, “on a handheld”, “short sessions of 20 minutes”, “playing with a controller on the couch”.
4. What to avoid
“No horror”, “nothing with crafting”, “no open-world checklists”. Negative constraints beat positive ones, because they remove the most disappointing options.
15 prompts to copy
- Something short and cozy, no combat.
- A story-heavy game under 12 hours that I can finish this week.
- A long RPG I can get lost in this winter, but not another open-world checklist.
- Co-op for two people on one couch, easy to learn.
- I loved my highest-rated games; give me something in that spirit that isn't a sequel.
- Something I can play in 20-minute sessions.
- A game that makes me think, with no time pressure.
- Atmospheric and a bit unsettling, but not jump-scare horror.
- I'm burned out on shooters — surprise me with a different genre that fits my taste.
- A hidden gem, nothing everyone has already played.
- A game with a great soundtrack and a strong visual style.
- Something relaxing to play while listening to a podcast.
- A challenging game that rewards learning, but is fair.
- Something I'll still want to play after a stressful day.
- Leave the mood blank: surprise me based on my taste.
The last one is valid too. With no mood at all, the AI simply works from your taste profile.
Habits that improve every pick
- Rate what you finish. Rated games are the strongest taste signal there is. See the status guide for what counts as finished.
- Mark games Dropped honestly. A game dropped after two hours says as much as a five-star game.
- Keep “Playing” short. If it lists ten games you've abandoned, the AI gets a muddy picture.
- Add what you own. The AI can only avoid duplicates it knows about. Import your Steam library to make that automatic.
What to do with the answer
You get a small number of picks, each with a short written reason. Where a pick matches the NXTO catalogue it comes with genre, tags and a time estimate, and you can add it to your backlog right away. A pick that isn't in the catalogue still shows its reason, and you can search for it. Treat the reason as the useful part: if it describes something you don't want, rewrite the prompt rather than forcing yourself to play it.
Be realistic about the limits. AI suggestions are educated guesses, not guarantees, and it may occasionally suggest a game that is hard to find on your platform. For a second opinion on any pick, press Similar on it, or read how to choose what to play next.
What it costs
Every account gets one free AI pick. After that you can buy a pack of 10 picks, or use NXTO Premium, which includes 30 picks every month. Prompts in your own language work: the AI answers in the language of the site you use.
