How to Organise Your Game Library Into Folders and Custom Lists
Statuses answer one question: where is this game in my journey? Backlog, Playing, Completed, Dropped. They don't answer a second question that matters just as much: what is this game for? That is what folders are for.
Folders vs. statuses vs. priority
- Status is the state of a game (not started, in progress, finished, abandoned).
- Priority (High, Medium, Low) is how much you want to play it soon.
- Folder is a group you define yourself: a mood, a person, an occasion, a series.
A game can be Backlog + High priority + “Co-op with Anna” — and each label answers a different question.
Folder ideas that actually get used
By occasion
Couch co-op, Train and travel (Switch/Steam Deck), Weekend only, Between big games.
By mood
Cozy, Brain off, Need a challenge, Story first. When you don't know what to play, pick the mood, then a game.
By length
Under 5 hours, One-evening games, Long RPGs. A shelf of short games is the fastest way to bring your finished count up.
By project
Finish the series, Games I'm streaming, Challenge 2026.
How folders work in NXTO
- Open your backlog and click + New folder above the game grid.
- Hover a game (or tap it on a phone) and pick a folder from the list on the card.
- Click a folder chip to see only its games. “Unfiled” shows everything you haven't put anywhere yet.
- Delete a folder any time: the games stay in your library, they just become unfiled.
Folders combine with every other filter, so “Couch co-op” + “Backlog” + High priority is one click away. Creating folders is part of NXTO Premium; folders you already made stay visible if you ever stop subscribing.
Don't over-organise
Three to six folders are plenty. If sorting becomes a hobby of its own, you're procrastinating on the actual playing — a trap we describe in how to manage a backlog that's out of control.
